It’s funny to think now that not too long ago online dating was considered to be something only done by losers and weirdos that couldn’t make friends or meet dates in real life because there was something wrong with them. When mainstream people first started experimenting with online personals, they didn’t tell anyone what they were doing because they were embarrassed and afraid that they would be made fun of by their friends and loved ones. Most people who met online didn’t tell anyone where they met their new partner for fear of being judged harshly or because they were afraid that their friends and family would treat their new partner differently if they found out. It’s pretty interesting to see just how far our society has changed with regards to socializing and finding friends and lovers online.
These days online dating is an accepted norm, and everyone encourages single people to join online dating websites. Most people know at least one couple that met on the internet and have formed a serious romantic relationship. It only took a few years to change the attitude toward internet meetings, and now people who don’t socialize and meet people online are seen as the oddballs and weirdos. People without a Facebook page and who aren’t on Twitter are looked at as though they’re from another planet. So many people are on social networking sites making friends with complete strangers, people they will likely never meet in person, yet these friends become very emotionally attached to each other and rely on each other’s friendship. These days, people think nothing of discussing their most personal issues online with other people who are in reality perfect strangers.
The internet can be a great way to meet people, and sometimes people can form lasting serious relationships and friendships with people they meet online. It is a great way to connect with people that we most likely would never have an opportunity to meet in real life.
